Oscillating K Giants with the Wire Satellite: Determination of Their Asteroseismic Masses

چکیده

Mass estimates of K giants are generally very uncertain. Traditionally, stellar masses of single field stars are determined by comparing their location in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram with stellar evolutionary models. Applying an additional method to determine the mass is therefore of significant interest for understanding stellar evolution. We present the time series analysis of 11 K giants recently observed with the WIRE satellite. With this comprehensive sample, we report the first confirmation that the characteristic acoustic frequency, νmax, can be predicted for K giants by scaling from the solar acoustic cut-off frequency. We are further able to utilize our measurements of νmax to determine an asteroseismic mass for each star with a lower uncertainty compared to the traditional method, for most stars in our sample. This indicates good prospects for the application of our method on the vast amounts of data that will soon come from the COROT and Kepler space missions. Oscillating red giants in the CoRoT exo-field: Asteroseismic mass and radius determination

Context. Observations and analysis of solar-type oscillations in red giant stars is an infant field of asteroseismic research with a number of open questions. Although stochastic oscillations have been firmly detected in red giants, both in radial velocity and photometric time series, the mostly too short or incomplete data sets complicate a detailed analysis. The french-led satellite CoRoT ind...

Red-giant seismic properties analyzed with CoRoT*

Context. The CoRoT 5-month long observation runs provide us with the opportunity to analyze a large variety of red-giant stars and derive their fundamental parameters from their asteroseismic properties. Aims. We perform an analysis of more than 4600 CoRoT light curves to extract as much information as possible. We take into account the characteristics of both the star sample and the method to ...

A : which age for a low metallicity solar like star ?

We explore the possible evolutionary status of the primary component of the binary 85 Pegasi, listed as a target for asteroseismic observations by the MOST satellite. In spite of the assessed ‘subdwarf’ status, and of the accurate distance determination from the Hipparcos data, the uncertainties in the metallicity and age, coupled with the uncertainty in the theoretical models, lead to a range ...

Solar-like oscillations in red giants in the CoRoT exo-field

Asteroseismic observations from space can provide us with long time series of uninterrupted high quality data for many stars at the same time. The CoRoT satellite (Convection Rotation and planetary Transits) was launched successfully in December 2006 and provides high precision photometery for a large number of stars. Here we present our research on (late G and K) red giant stars observed durin...

Asteroseismic versus Gaia distances: A first comparison

Context. The Kepler space mission led to a large number of high-precision time series of solar-like oscillators. Using a Bayesian analysis that combines asteroseismic techniques and additional ground-based observations, the mass, radius, luminosity, and distance of these stars can be estimated with good precision. This has given a new impetus to the research field of galactic archeology. Aims. ...
